Mumpreneur Feature: Hopscotch Online

I’m a big supporter of businesses run by mums and  this is the first in a series of features about Mumpreneurs.

Sunshine is a mum to  two small children who  I met via Twitter. I am a gadget freak and use smart phones and an ipad in home education, so when I found out about the app she is developing for busy mums I was intrigued (The app will be a hit with Twitter mums I am sure) I for one can’t wait for it to be available.

Take a look at her video to find out more, read the interview and watch this space as I’ll be keeping you updated.

Interview with Sunshine:

I graduated from the Nation Film School in 1997, I became a successful documentary editor (and occasional director).I was nominated for a Bafta for editing Jamie’s School Dinners.

I had my kids, and after baby two was born I didn’t go back to work, because my husband’s business (www.pforproduction.com) was doing well enough for me to take a break. Cue total rethink of my career etc….

How did the idea for the app  come about?

The idea came about 3 summers ago, when I let go of our nanny and realised what an amazing job she’d been doing! I discovered it was really hard to find out about all the local stuff to do with kids. I had also just got an iPhone and fallen in love with the maps – tick tick tick… IDEA!!

What made you want to start your own business?

When I looked at returning to work after my second child, I felt very strongly that I would only be prepared to leave my kids for something I love and feel passionate about. While I have loved making tv, with this app I really feel we can make the lives of parents easier and more rewarding, and provide easier access to the support of friends and communities… Now, that’s a reason to go back to work..

Are there any Mumpreneurs who have inspired you?

I’ve been inspired by all sort of mumpreneurs, local and international. My friend Sarah Rodrigues writes our newsletter every week, and has been freelance-writing professionally non-stop since she had kids, and until recently she had 3 kids under 5! She’s a powerhouse of motivation and strength!
Obviously Justine Roberts and Carrie Longton of Mumsnet are a great inspiration to me! Tech entrepreneurs mobilising technology to improve people’s lives!
Laura Tenison, founder of Jojo Mamon Bebe, has taken a traditional mumpreneur area but done it with great style and taste.
Tamara Mellon has been an inspiration in the previously male dominated world of luxury brands, she shows true ambition and vision and she’s a single mum.. Hats off.
Visit www.hopscotch-online.com to register for the newsletter which gives great ideas for things to do with your kids at the weekends and to be kept up to date about the app. Follow Hopscotch on Twitter @HopscotchFoundr or  friend on Facebook

Halloween Howling

Halloween Howling

Children dressed as witches  goblins and vampires

Orange pumpkin buckets filled with lollies and cookies

As they knock on each door in the dark misty streets

Can you hear the sound of their running  feet?

Spiders hang from doorways and cobwebs are many

It’s a Trick or treat frenzy so they hope  you are ready

Little ones feeling wobbly holding hands really tight

Faces bright with delight as they run through the night

Then suddenly STOP!

A howl so spooky Mums and Dads start to shiver

Small eyes fills with tears and lips start to quiver

This house is in darkness save for a flickering candle

The little boy drops his hand from the old wooden door

Turns to his mum and stamps his feet on the floor

I want more sweets my bucket is still empty!

Are YOU going to knock on the door?

A blogger splits herself in two!

I love writing Five Kids and Counting but there are definitely some aspects of me that are missing from this blog – I love to get on my soapbox and sound off about current affairs and politics. I don’t want to muddy the waters here so I have started a whole new News, Current Affairs and political blog at www.mammpolitico.wordpress.com. You can follow @mammapolitico if this is your cup of tea. I’ve begin by looking at the way debtors are treated in this country in the light of the Eurozone crisis and today a review of John Humphrey’s look at the future of the Welfare State. I’ll be keeping Five kids for all things a parenting and family. I have just one more project up my sleeve – always was a multi tasker… so watch this space!

Music as Therapy

I was so excited to be tagged for Music as Therapy by mum2four the brilliant meme started by misslexywoo.
I don’t get much time to listen to music these days but my DH has earphones permanently fixed to his head and he has assigned me organisor and curator of his ipod. We always have music on in the car although it’s a fight as to who gets their cd in first !

To take part in the Meme you have to choose
3 beautiful songs.
3 different bands.
3 sets of lyrics that touch you in any way you want to show.
So here are my songs:

This song sums up my philosophy for life really….

Let It Be – The Beatles

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Let it be, let it be, …..

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, ..

This next choice is one of my all time favourite songs – love the Alexandra Burke version too:

Hallelujah- Leonard Cohen

Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
This is love not some kind of a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there’s a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
it’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name
But if I did, well really, what’s it to you?
There’s a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Yeah but it’s not a complaint that you hear tonight,
It’s not the laughter of someone who claims to have seen the light
No it’s a cold and it’s a very lonely Hallelujah.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah…

Leonard Cohen 1984 & 1994

and finally I want this one playing at my funeral !!

Cold Play – Fix You

When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down on your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down on your face
And on your face I…

Tears stream down on your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down on your face
And on your face I…

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
